FUNTINGTON PARISH NEWSLETTER

MARCH 2010:  NUMBER 261

PARISH MEADOW

There has been much speculation regarding the possible sale of the Parish Meadow.   To confirm that, as the result of discussion during and after the Village of the Year competition, the Parish Council considered several areas that would benefit the parish.   In keeping with Government policy that Parish, District and County Councils should realise assets that would be of value, the Parish Meadow was considered to be such an area.   The sale of the Meadow for house building would raise cash, part of which could kick-start the proposed new build Village Hall.   Ownership has been established, and the Meadow area is being registered with the Land Registry.   The current position is that it is work-in-progress.   To reiterate, when we have something concrete, a public meeting will be held to discuss all aspects of the Meadow.   The meeting is for all parishioners.

SOUTH DOWNS NATIONAL PARK

Sadly, vice-chairman Val Bateman was not successful in the vote for membership of the committee.   Candidates from Stoughton and Northchapel were elected as parish council representatives.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

The Parish Council voted to name the new site as Portal Close.   Marshal of the Air Force, Viscount Portal of Hungerford, Chief of the Air Staff in the 1939-45 war, lived after the war at West Ashling House, and Council felt the proposed name was a fitting reminder of Viscount Portal and his service to the country.

SPEED INDICATOR DEVICES

On 2 February, the six parishes held a meeting with representatives from West Sussex County Council at West Stoke Village Hall, and agreed plans to roll out the programme.   Councillor Geoff Keetch was appointed Chairman/Co-ordinator of the group, with County Councillor Mike Hall acting as deputy.   At the Parish Council meeting, PCSO Colin Booker announced that he has completed training which will enable him to use the hand held speed gun within the parish.   He will also use, independently, the county SIDS.   Early warning – watch your speeds in the parish.

ACTION IN RURAL SUSSEX (AIRS)

AIRS have identified issues they consider to be rural priorities for 2010, namely rural deprivation, access to services, economy-growth, broadband, affordable housing, fuel poverty, services for the aged, rural young people, support for community buildings and assets, public and community transport.   For more information, visit www.ruralsussex.org.uk

NEXT MEETING

Parish Council, Wednesday 3 March, Village Hall at 6.30pm.   Also note the Parish Council Annual Meeting will be held at the Village Hall on Wednesday 28 April, 6pm for 6.30pm.   It is hoped that a presentation will be made of the West Ashling affordable housing project.
