The Funtington Informer

December 2011 Update from Colin Booker

Ladies and Gentleman

Since my last update I have been out on a couple on occasions with the Speed Indicator Device these were both early morning. There were a few driving offences seen, these were either Speeding, Not wearing a seatbelt or Driving whilst using a mobile phone. All details of the vehicles were passed to the roads policing team via Operation Crackdown.

I have recently spent a day working with the Roads Policing Team, I discussed at length the issues with Speeding out in the rural locations. The Roads Policing Teams gather all of the intell they receive and this generates some of their workload. This means that a number of regular speeders get caught at other locations because they speed regularly through smaller villages. The Roads Policing Team will continue to monitor areas like East Ashling as and when they can.

I understand some of you have been out with either the Police or the Parish Speed Indicator device, How have you found this? Did you find many driving offences?

The Highways agency put their own static Speed Indicator Device in the village on Monday 14th November, it was there for a week. The average Speed of vehicles from this was Cars - 35MPH and vans - 36MPH. On the Sunday the SID was up the average speed of cars went up by 1.5MPH. I will be speaking and working with Highways to see what else we can do around the village.

On another note recently there has been a number of garage breaks and vehicle breaks around the Bosham and Fishbourne area, please make sure all of your garages and vehicles are locked and secure. There was also a vehicle set alight near to the Kingleyvale nature reserve, this vehicle was stolen from a farm near to West Marden.

If there are any other issues you feel I need to look at please contact me.

    To the community of Funtington

My name is Colin Booker and I am the local Police Community Support Officer for Funtington, Stoughton and Compton parishes. Hopefully some of you will have already seen me walking or driving around the village. If you have any concerns or issues regarding the area that you live please don't hesitate to contact me, my contact details are as follows: -

I m currently trying to find people that would be interested in helping me to set up a Neighbourhood Management Panel, this will help me improve ways to engage with the community and become identifiable, accessible and responsive to your needs and concerns. The idea is to be able to work together as a group and set up priorities which the police and partner agencies will work together on to solve. Interested in becoming involved in a Neighbourhood Panel for your area? or if you would simply like further information please contact myself either by e-mail or leave me a message on my voicemail and I will happily get back to you.

Neighbourhood Priorities

Find out here about local priorities in your area, and what is being done about them.

Beauty spot car parks are still being targeted by criminals. It appears that vehicles with any type of belongings on view may be broken into. I will maintain regular patrols of these car-parks, varying the times I patrol. Neighbourhood Management Panels have been established in most Wards in the County of Sussex. The Neighbourhood Management Panels known as NMP’s are designed for a community to set their own policing priorities. Whilst your local police team must also seek to fulfil Policing Priorities set by the Central Government and Sussex Police Authority, it is equally important to deal with local issues which affect you. As your area has not formed an NMP at this time, my intention is to canvass the community and seek to establish one. I would ask that you spread the word on my behalf, speak to your neighbours and friends who live within the area, as I welcome you all to contact me to discuss this in more detail.

Crime Prevention

Suspicious vehicles/persons

If you see any suspicious vehicles or people around in your area please contact the police. We have had numerous reports about vehicles seen in suspicious circumstances that have links to poaching.

Garage and Shed Breaks

We have been experiencing quite a few breaks or attempted breaks to Garages/Sheds across the West side of Chichester District. Please make sure all buildings including garden sheds are securely locked. If you see or hear anything that looks suspicious please report it.

Operation Crackdown

Speeding - Thoughtless driving or riding - Drink or drug driving - Mobile phone use at wheel - Abandoned cars - Not wearing seat belts - Tailgating - Underage drivers or riders - Vehicles in unsafe conditions - Untaxed cars and motorbikes. You can tell us about any abandoned vehicle or any anti-social driving that you have seen using the dedicated Sussex-wide Operation Crackdown website - Don’t tolerate it - report it!

Bogus Callers
  • Here's what you can do to keep yourself safe - and help others:
  • When you hear someone at the door:
  • Take your time - a genuine caller will wait.  Look and see who is there, using the door viewer or a window.
  • If you do not recognise who it is:
  • Apply your door chain or door bar.  Check all your doors are locked - burglars often come in pairs, so one may come in the back why you're being distracted at the front door. Always ask for identification, but remember:
  • ID cards are easy to copy. If in doubt, ask them to wait and call their company to check - once again, a genuine caller will not mind.
  • Use your phone book or utility bill to find the number - don't accept a mobile number offered to you by the caller. You do not have to let people in and if you are uncertain then don't, however persuasive or plausible the caller is. It is better to turn a genuine caller away than let a burglar in.
  • If you look after someone who is elderly or vulnerable, please do all you can to make sure they heed this advice - and to persuade them not to keep large sums of money at home.
  • Remember - call the police immediately if you become the victim of one of these burglars, or if you see anyone behaving suspiciously near where you live.
Car Crime

Please make sure your vehicles are locked securely and personal items are not left in the vehicle in full view. Please report any suspicious males or vehicles seen in your area as over the last month we have experienced a fair bit of car crime.

Street Briefings

My next street briefing will be on 16th June 2010, at 18:00 in the village of East Marden
