About the Parish
Within the Parish are four main village communities - Funtington itself plus East and West Ashling and West Stoke plus that part of Hambrook north of the A27 trunk road. The parish covers an area of 2002 hectares (4947 acres). Until 1933 West Stoke was a separate civil parish. The ecclesiastical parishes of Funtington with Sennicotts and of West Stoke remain separate although now sharing a vicar and rector. There were in 2000, 576 homes in the combined parish with a resident population of about 1500. Funtington is a mainly rural parish just north-west of the cathedral city of Chichester, within its local government district and in the County of West Sussex. The parish is bounded to the south by the A27 coastal trunk road, to the west by the parish of Westbourne Parish (beyond Marlpit Lane), to the east by Fishbourne Parish and to the north by the Downs and Stoughton Parish. The land varies from rich coastal plain to chalk downland. There are large deposits of sand and gravel below the surface.
